GPS Vehicle Tracking

Global positioning systems or GPS has undergone major changes in size and price that cell phones already have them and these are just US$500-1,000 phones. Considering the prices of vehicles today that range from US$5,000 for a simple car to US$1,000,000 for some sports cars and commercial trucks, about ten times more that cell phones. It would really pay for people to install GPS on these vehicles to allow stolen vehicle tracking which would then increase the chances of it being recovered in case of theft. Also, vehicle fleet tracking can provide constant monitoring of the positions of fleet vehicles and therefore allow better management of them. Along with radios, GPS can allow taxi operators to always know the location of their vehicles and easily direct available cars to call in passengers. This assures maximum service to passengers and therefore maximum income to the drivers and the taxi company.

There are many commercial vehicle tracking systems available in the market. The cell phone based systems use cell sites to triangulate the position of equipped vehicle or the person as the case may be. Traditional GPS uses geosynchronous satellites as bases of triangulation which allow tracking of vehicles in a large area. However, these systems require powerful radio systems that can reach these GPS enabled satellites. In contrast, cell phone based systems only need systems powerful enough to reach cell sites and are ideal for in-city, cell site covered area service.
